Ottawa police have laid charges in connection to a fatal crash last week in the Byward Market.

On Jan. 11, a man on an e-bicyclehit an open car door. He was then thrown into traffic on Cumberland St. where he was struck by a passing vehicle.

The 66-year-old cyclist died on scene.

Police have now charged 24-year-old Alaadin Murad of Ottawa with improperly opening a vehicle door (dooring).

They say Murad had just parked his vehicle on Cumberland when he opened his door unsafely, causing the e-cyclist to hit the open car door, which them threw him into the path of traffic.

The police’s collision investigation unit has wrapped up its investigation. The victim will not be identified so as to respect the family’s wishes.

In September, new legislation came into effect in Ontario on 'dooring' - when a driver improperly opens a car door in the path of an oncoming cyclist.

'Dooring' a cyclist now carries a fine of $365 and three demerit points. That's up from a $60 fine, and no points.
