Two big snow falls and a stretch of cold weather have given Ottawa-area ski operators one of the best starts in years.

The conditions at New Year’s are similar to those found in the middle of February, says Luc Desormeaux, of Mont Cascades.  80% of the runs are open.

Ski slopes in the Ottawa-area report up to 80 centimetres of base, that's close to a metre of natural snow.

Operators typically do 20 to 25% of their entire seasonal business over the Christmas break.
