Daniel Alfredsson is leaving the Ottawa Senators.

Alfredsson has been working with the club as a senior advisor of hockey operations for two years.

In a written statement, the legendary Senators captain has announced he will "step away from the game and will take this time to evaluate what professional challenge I will pursue next.

General Manager Pierre Dorion says he and Alfredsson spoke Friday about his decision.

"Daniel's input over the last two years has been tremendous," Dorion says. "Wherever Daniel goes . . . he's a pretty bright guy. He's going to have success. He just felt at this point in time he wanted to step away."

Alfredsson says he will stay in Ottawa after spending the summer in Sweden.
