A Gatineau cyclist has been charged with failing to stop at a red light after he was struck by a car in the downtown core on Saturday, a collision caught on camera.

Nick Fleury was driving in the area of Laurier Avenue and Lyon Street Saturday around noon when he said a cyclist ran a red light and was struck by a car entering the intersection.

"After the video cuts, we hopped out of the vehicle to call the police and see if everyone was ok," he said. "However by the time I pressed the button to save the video and got out of the car, there was already a police officer on scene."

The cyclist, 30-year-old Alexandre Remi Baril-Picard of Gatineau, has been charged with failing to stop at a red light under the Highway Traffic Act.

The driver of the car was unharmed, but is reportedly traumatized. Photos show the car has a dented hood and a cracked windshield.

The dash cam video captures the moment of impact, which may disturb some viewers. The video also contains graphic language.

Fleury said a police officer in an unmarked vehicle witnessed the entire incident.

Lucky, Fleury said the cyclist walked away from the collision with just a sore hip. Paramedics treated him at the scene, but the man refused transport to the hospital.

"He had a very sore hip and leg from what we saw," Fleury said. "The paramedics checked him out and released him quickly."

Cycling advocate Alex DeVries said called video "obviously disturbing."

"Anytime you see something like that it's pretty horrifying," he said. "I think that a lot of people are in too much of a rush, stopping for yellow lights, stopping at stop lights and stop signs, and yielding, that would make a big difference."

When asked what tips he had for drivers and cyclists, DeVries had a simple answer: follow the rules of the road.

"Just obey the rules of the road, primarily with yielding and right of way, that means traffic signals, right turns, things like that."The collision happened at the same intersection where last year 23-year-old Nusrat Jahan was killed when her bike was struck by a dump truck turning right. The driver of that vehicle was charged.
