Ontario Provincial Police say Highway 62 north of Belleville shutdown for hours Friday after an early morning collision involving one of their own officers.

When emergency response arrived at the scene at about 2:30 a.m., the on-duty officer was in the cruiser and unable to get out. He was extricated by the Belleville Fire Department.

The police officer is identified as John Oke, a detective with the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau.

"It was a single-vehicle collision," said Const. Kathy Morgan. "The roads re-opened at about 1 p.m."

Const. Morgan says his injuries are serious and that the incident is still under investigation.
