OTTAWA -- Ottawa Public Health is reporting 22 new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa today, the third lowest one-day increase in novel coronavirus cases this month.

There are two more deaths linked to COVID-19 in Ottawa.

Since the first case of COVID-19 on March 11, there have been 7.990 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, including 363 deaths.

The 22 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday comes one day after 11 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Ottawa, the lowest one-day increase in cases in November.

Speaking on Newstalk 580 CFRA's The Morning Rush with Bill Carroll, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches was asked what is Ottawa doing right to help limit the spread of COVID in the community.

"It is about individual people who are wearing their mask, who are keep two metres distance from others, who are staying home when they're sick, unless of course they're going to get their COVID test. That's what works, it actually works," said Dr. Etches.

"We don't have to live with high COVID numbers if we're able to support people to do those things."

Public Health Ontario reported 1,417 new cases of COVID-19 across Ontario on Wednesday. There are 463 new cases of COVID-19 in Peel Region, 410 cases in Toronto and 178 cases in York Region.

COVID-19 POSITIVITY RATE

Ottawa Public Health reports Ottawa's COVID-19 positivity rate was 2.2 per cent for the period Nov. 9 to 15. 

That's down from 2.4 per cent for the period Nov. 7 to 13.

ACTIVE CASES OF COVID-19 IN OTTAWA

The number of known active cases of COVID-19 in the City of Ottawa continues to drop.

Ottawa Public Health reported 411 active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa on Wednesday.

A total 7,216 people have recovered after testing positive for COVID-19.

The number of active cases is the number of total lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 minus the numbers of resolved cases and deaths. A case is considered resolved 14 days after known symptom onset or positive test result.

HOSPITALIZATIONS IN OTTAWA

There are 43 people currently in an Ottawa hospital with COVID-19 related illnesses.

There are four people in the intensive care unit with COVID-19.

Of the people in hospital, one are in their 30s, two are in their 40s, three are in their 50s, seven are in their 60s, 12 are in their 70s, 12are in their 80s, and eight are 90 or older.

CASES OF COVID-19 IN OTTAWA BY AGE CATEGORY

Here is a breakdown of all known COVID-19 cases in Ottawa by age category:

  • 0-9 years old: Three new cases (525 cases total)
  • 10-19 years-old: Three new cases (918 cases total)
  • 20-29 years-old: Four new cases (1,654 cases total)
  • 30-39 years-old: Two new cases (1,046 cases total)
  • 40-49 years-old: Three new cases (1,013 cases total)
  • 50-59 years-old: One new case (931 cases total)
  • 60-69-years-old: Five new cases (625 cases total)
  • 70-79 years-old: One new case (409 cases total)
  • 80-89 years-old: Zero new cases (516 cases total)
  • 90+ years old: Zero new cases (353 cases total)
 

COVID-19 CASES ACROSS THE REGION

There are two new cases of COVID-19 in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit region.

The Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Public Health unit reported three new cases.

One new case was confirmed in the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit.

There are no new cases in Renfrew County.

The Quebec Government reported 60 new cases of COVID-19 in the Outaouais, which includes Gatineau. 

INSTITUTIONAL OUTBREAKS

Ottawa Public Health is reporting COVID-19 outbreaks at 35 institutions in Ottawa, including long-term care homes, retirement homes, daycares, hospitals and schools.

There is a new COVID-19 outbreak at Cedarview Middle School.

One of the COVID-19 outbreaks at St. Mother Theresa High School has been declared over.

The schools and childcare spaces currently experiencing outbreaks are:

A single laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in a resident or staff member of a long-term care home, retirement home or shelter triggers an outbreak response, according to Ottawa Public Health. In childcare settings, a single confirmed, symptomatic case in a staff member, home daycare provider, or child triggers an outbreak.

Under provincial guidelines, a COVID-19 outbreak in a school is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff in a school with an epidemiological link, within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school (including transportation and before or after school care).
