The man accused of hijacking the widow of a slain Ottawa police officer could be designated a dangerous offender after being found guilty of two on Friday.
Kevin Ransdell was found guilty of forcible confinement and robbery in connection with the carjacking of Anna Korutowksa, the widow of Const. Eric Czapnik, in the summer of 2010.
The 29-year-old threatened Korutowska with a knife, robbed her, then forced her to drive him to another location.
The charge of possession of a dangerous weapon was stayed, with a death threat charge dismissed.
A hearing is set for Nov. 8 on whether Ransdell will be declared a dangerous offender. A sentencing date will be set after that.
"We're considering bringing a dangerous offender applicationa nd the ultimate result of that may be an indeterminate jail sentence, so that's the first step we're considering," said Crown prosecutor Dallas Mack.
A dangerous offender status is the most serious sentence possible under Canadian law. Ransdell already has a criminal record which includes obstructing the police, robbery and parole violation.
Czapnik was stabbed to death outside the Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus on Dec. 27, 2009.
