The decision to fold the Ottawa Rapidz baseball team is leading several city councillors to question the need for a stand-alone baseball stadium in the capital.

"The City of Ottawa should never have been in the business of providing a professional sports facility, period," Coun. Jacques Legendre told CTV Ottawa on Tuesday.

The owners of the Ottawa Rapidz told the Can-Am independent baseball league Monday they were pulling the plug, just one month after the team completed its first season in the capital.

The City of Ottawa is among those who stand to lose money as the team folds and prepares to file for bankruptcy with debts tallying more than $1 million.

"This businessman has decided not to fulfill the terms of his two-year lease and really not even give us an opportunity to get into discussion about how to use the facility over the next few years," said Mayor Larry O'Brien.

Some councillors are now considering selling the property at Coventry Road, if another team isn't fielded quickly.

A city estimate pegs the value of both the land and the stadium at $20 million.
