City council approved a new development in Riverside South Thursday that will bring more business and transit to the south-Ottawa community.

About 68 acres of vacant land near Limebank Road and Earl Armstrong Road will be re-zoned and developed to include more than 2,000 new homes, a new transit hub and big-box stores.

The community only has one grocery store and residents in the area have to drive long distances to get basic services.

There are currently 11,000 to 12,000 people living in Riverside South. However, the population is growing, with 50,000 more people expected to live there by 2031.
