CORNWALL, Ont. - Police have seized nearly 3,000 kilograms of tobacco that they believe was smuggled in from the United States.

Cornwall police pulled over a truck and trailer on Highway 401 near Cornwall, Ont., and called in the RCMP when they discovered 24 boxes of tobacco on Tuesday.

The RCMP seized the tobacco, as well as the truck and trailer.

The tobacco, which police suspect is contraband, is worth an estimated $250,000.

A 46-year-old man from Cornwall is charged with possessing illegal tobacco as well as various traffic violations.

He was released and will appear in court in August.
