Cornwall man charged after accidentally shooting himself in the leg
Cornwall police have charged a 26-year-old Cornwall man who was not authorized to carry a weapon after he accidentally shot himself in the leg.
Police said in a news release on Wednesday the incident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 4 in the area of Easton Avenue and Danis Avenue in a residential area in the city's east end.
The man was found with a single gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to hospital with a non-life threatening injury.
In an update on Friday, police say an investigation revealed the man was in possession of a firearm and allegedly shot himself. An email from Cornwall police confirmed the shooting was accidental.
"The man was bound by a probation order with the relevant conditions to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and to not possess any weapons. It is also alleged the man was bound by a second probation order with the relevant condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour," police said.
"Furthermore, it is alleged, the man was bound by three separate prohibition orders, each with the relevant condition to not possess any firearms."
The man was charged with three counts of fail to comply with probation order, three counts of possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm and one count of careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition.
The man was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing.
Further charges are pending, police say, and an investigation continues.
