Suzanne and Danny Baker are calling out to complete strangers to join a half-billion dollar fight against General Motors.
“It’s a horrible thing to have to get together with people over the loss of your child,” says Suzanne Baker.
The Cornwall couple is the first to sign on to a Canadian class-action lawsuit against the motor vehicle company.
Their son Nicholas Baker was killed in a car crash nearly two years ago. It was only recently that the family received a letter addressed to him from General Motors stating his 2006 Saturn Ion was part of a massive Recall.
The problem: a faulty ignition switch that causes failures in power steering, anti-lock brakes and airbags.
Baker’s airbags never deployed.
“We still have a lot of documentation to get including police reports, accident reconstruction reports, and various reports from Transport Canada,” says lawyer Russel Molot.
GM has faced strong scrutiny over its handling of the faulty ignition switches which could have been fixed by a 57-cent part.
A congressional committee looking into the matter has called GM’s actions a “failure within the system”.
“Justice, that’s what it means to me,” says Suzanne Baker.
