The man who killed an Ottawa police officer and wounded seven others in a 1997 shootout has been released from jail after serving time for a separate stalking incident.

Fred Koepke was charged in 2009 for stalking his female neighbour. He was sentenced on Monday to the 18 months he's already served, and was released from custody.

Koepke was found not-guilty of the 1997 shooting that killed Const. David Kirkwood by reason of insanity. He was released from hospital a decade later after a review board found he was no longer a threat.

A year later, he attacked his wife and then assaulted his mother. Koepke is a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic.
