Construction has kicked off at a new Sensplex arena in Ottawa’s east end.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held on Shefford drive in Gloucester, the site of the J.B. Potvin arena.

The new $26 million facility will feature four ice pads, including the one already there at the J.B. Potvin arena, to meet the community’s growing demand for ice time.

More than fifty players from the Gloucester Centre Minor Hockey Association attended the ceremony and helped unveil the look of the new Richcraft Sensplex.

Ottawa Senator’s player Marc Methot was also there to help break ground at the new site.

“I know as a kid growing up, you just want to get out there on the ice, and this is an opportunity for all these kids out here in the east end particularly to get out here and not have to drive a half-hour, and I’m sure that’s affecting the parents more than anything,” Methot said.

The new facility is expected to generate $15 million a year from activities and tournaments.

It’s scheduled to open in September 2014.
