A small community east of Ottawa is showing not even the Grinch can steal their Christmas spirit.

The Riceville Food Bank, near Plantagenet Ont., was broken into Wednesday night.

Thieves made off with Christmas hampers filled with food, turkeys and toys when they broke the door to the food bank.

The hampers were supposed to be delivered to 20 of the community's neediest families.

"Boxes were missing, there was stuff on the floor, bread was all over the floor," said Riceville Food Bank volunteer Joyce Deslauriers.

"This is taking from the poor. I feel awful that they did this. These are people in need, people that are disabled."

Volunteers are now scrambling to replace the stolen goods by Saturday, that's when families are scheduled to come and pick up their hampers.

By Thursday night, the community had already responded to the news with donations pouring in. The need though is still great.

There is a still a need for toys, hams, turkeys and other food to ensure the hampers can be delivered this weekend.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can drop them off at 740 Station St. in Plantagenet Ont., located about 64 kilometres east of Ottawa.
