It's not every day you find Frozen's Elsa chatting up a Dalek or a little boy running away from The Empire.

At Ottawa Comiccon those kinds of sightings are ordinary.

"It's always fun to dress up and it's always fun to wear one of these costumes and to see other people's expressions about your hard work," said Brandon Saikaley.

Organizers estimate a record crowd of more than 40,000 people attended the 5th annual Ottawa Comiccon from May 13 to 15, 2016. The event drew so many fans to the EY Centre that traffic on the airport parkway was heavier than usual. Ottawa Police even issued a warning Saturday urging drivers to take extra time.

"Year one we had 22,000 people. Five years in we will probably break last year's record of 40,000," said Spokesperson Jason Rockman. "So it's just an incredible event. The people of Ottawa really embrace this event."

Comiccon celebrates everything pop culture from comic books, to art, fantasy characters, and costume design. Vendors of all kinds are on site offering what attendees said was something for everyone. In recent years the event has become more mainstream as popular comic books have morphed into big blockbuster movies and television shows.

"There aren't many times you can dress up with a bunch of people. So why not go out and meet people and see what their skills are," said one cosplayer.

Organizers said they are looking forward to next year's event, hoping it will be bigger than ever.
