Colonel By Secondary School is eastern Ontario's top high school in the Fraser Institute's latest rankings.

In total there are five area high schools in the top 20 schools in the province, according to the 2012 rankings released Sunday.

Colonel By in east Ottawa is sixth on the list, which ranks schools according to standardized testing results.

John McRae Secondary, West Carleton Secondary and Kemptville's St. Michael Catholic High School all came in at 15th out of 718 schools ranked.

The latter two schools are down from their five-year average rankings – West Carleton averages the 12th spot and St. Michael has the best ranking over that time period.

St. Joseph High School in east Ottawa was ranked 20th.

Kingston High School is best in that city at 68th overall, while St. Theresa Secondary in Belleville came in at 23rd.

The best school in the province according to the annual report is St. Michael's Choir School in Toronto.
