Ontario Provincial Police are on the scene of a CN train derailment that sent 12 cars off the tracks, east of Cornwall.

Police were called to a rail line in a forested area near Summerstown, when a number of box cars left the tracks near County Road 27 at about 10:20 a.m.

Police say it appears CN train #368 was travelling eastbound when the derailment occurred. Three of the rail cars were carrying dangerous goods, including ammonium nitrate, sulpheric acid and sodium cyanide.

Although police started evacuating homes on nearby Lapierre Road, the evacuation effort was halted when the CN dangerous goods team ruled there was no threat to the public.

Police say no injuries were reported and there is no concern for public safety at this time. The extent of damage to the track is unknown.

The derailment is affecting Via Rail train service between Montreal and Toronto. Passengers travelling between those two cities are being rerouted through Ottawa, adding two hours to their trip.

Via Rail passengers in Ottawa aren't affected by the derailment.

Police have set up a detour at Fraser and Lapierre Roads, as well as Fraser and Diversion Roads.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
