A 76-year-old man from Clayton, ON is dead after being hit by a motorcycle in Jamaica on Thursday.

Police in Negril, Jamaica say John Rowson died from his injuries after being hit while crossing a road with his wife. Rowson's wife Ena wasn't hurt in the crash.

Negril police say the driver of the motorcycle fled the scene.

Global Affairs Canada confirms the death, saying in a statement "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian Citizen who passed away in Jamaica."

The statement goes on to say "Canadian consular officials in Jamaica are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to the family."

On Facebook, Rowson's son Mark says he was sailing his boat off the coast of British Columbia when he got the news.

"I got a phone call from my son...he had to tell me that my father had been killed by a motorcycle while he was out for a walk with my mom in Jamaica. They were holding hands."

A friend of Mark's has set up a GoFundMe page to try and help raise funds for Mark to return to Ottawa to attend his father's funeral.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place early next week. Police continue to investigate.
