The timeline for Ottawa's light rail project has been moved up.

Mayor Jim Watson says it should be ready for at least a ceremonial ride in 2017, the same year Canada will celebrate its 150th birthday.

The city says the light rail trains will begin carrying passengers by the spring of 2018 -- one year ahead of schedule.

The new $2-billion light rail line will run from Tunney's Pasture to Orleans and will include a downtown tunnel.
