Fire officials say a family is homeless after a Christmas tree fire gutted a home at 3035 Old Highway 17 in Rockland Thursday afternoon.

Suzanne Lafond, a wife and mother of two, was home alone wrapping presents. Fire officials say an oil lamp spilled on the family's Christmas tree and it quickly went up in flames.

Lafond was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Her daughter tells CTV she is worried about her mother's medical condition. Lafond has battled cancer and, after today's fire, is suffering from smoke inhalation.

Flames engulfed the first and second floors. Local fire crews immediately called Ottawa Fire Service to help put it out.

Fire officials estimate damages to be about $200,000.

Most of the damage was to the interior of the home.
