Ottawa's police chief says he doesn't want officers to kill any more wildlife after two moose were shot and killed in the last two weeks.

"I'm as frustrated as the public, and I understand fully. I get the e-mails and it's the last thing we want to do to shoot these moose. So, I understand their frustration," Chief Vern White told CTV Ottawa on Monday.

Police shot a moose in a residential area near St. Laurent Boulevard after it was spotted on nearby Triole Street Saturday morning. Police said the animal was killed because of concern for public safety.

Almost two weeks earlier, another moose was shot and killed by police when it failed to react to tranquillizers.

The City of Ottawa, which falls outside the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Natural Resources, currently doesn't have a plan to deal with large animals when they make their way into city limits.

Although the city uses two contractors to tranquilize animals, those contractors were unavailable on Saturday.

White says he's been trying to get a protocol for these types of situations for three years, and now wants a solution to be brought to the table this week.

Police are currently in talks with the City of Ottawa, the National Capital Commission and the Ministry of Natural Resources to come up with a plan.
