BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Charges against two of three men still before the courts in connection with a native blockade on a bridge east of Belleville have been withdrawn.

Brian Doreen, 36, and Douglas Tugwood, 36, both of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, had been charged with mischief over $5,000 but the charges were dismissed in Belleville Provincial Court.

The charges were laid against the men and three other people after about half a dozen protesters blocked the Skyway Bridge near Deseronto for around 10 hours on Oct. 4, hoping to raise awareness of the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women.

One of the accused, Matthew Weldon, 24, of Tyendinaga, was given a conditional discharge and placed on 12 months probation after he pleaded guilty to mischief on Jan. 8.

The same charge against Tiffany Simpson of Cannington was withdrawn at the same time.

The fifth person, Dennis Hill of Tyendinaga, will appear in court on March 11 on one count of mischief.
