OTTAWA - The Ottawa Police Service Robbery Unit has laid charges in connection to downtown swarming that occurred Sunday evening.

On September 11, 2016, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a male and female were walking through the park in the area of the Sandy Hill Community Centre. They were approached by a male and female. The male produced a handgun, pointed it at the two victims, and demanded their phones. Each victim provided their phone and the suspects fled the area. Officers received information that the suspects might be located along Wiggins Private. Officers attended and located both suspects. A pellet gun was seized at the time of arrest. There were no injuries.

Ashley Meneses-Lopes, age 25, and Yassin Samatar, age 30, both of Ottawa, are jointly charged with the following offences:

  • Two counts of robbery with an offensive weapon
  • Conspiracy
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public
  • Pointing a firearm

Yassin Samatar is additionally charged with:

  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possession of a firearm while prohibited
  • Breach of Recognizance

Ashley Meneses-Lopes is additionally charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance
  • Two counts of breach of recognizance
