Ottawa Police have charged 37-year-old Peter Herauf with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 30-year-old Kayla Sullivan.

Herauf is also charged with aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Ottawa Police were called around 4:36 p.m. Friday about a stabbing on George Street, outside the Salvation Army.

Sullivan's death marks Ottawa's 15th homicide of 2016.

Ottawa Police Duty Insp. Mark Patterson says the stabbing led to a second altercation in which a man in his thirties suffered an injury to his chest. He is in stable but serious condition. In that altercation, the suspect also received what Patterson called "non-life threatening" injuries.

The suspect, a man in his thirties, was apprehended a short time later in Gatineau.

According to eye-witnesses, the suspect ran up to the first victim on the sidewalk outside the Salvation Army. "I was standing beside the girl that got stabbed," says 18-year-old Samantha Warden. "She fell to the ground. She was screaming I got stabbed. I got stabbed."

Warden says the assailant ran, and some bystanders chased him down in the nearby parking lot. That's where the other injuries occured. The man stabbed in the chest is said to be the first victim's boyfriend.

Witnesses say the assailant was also stabbed with a knife.
