Residents in Ottawa can soon expect to take out their trash every two weeks. That’s compared to the current weekly garbage pickup.

Under the current bylaw, every household is allowed a limit of three items for garbage pickup, every week. But when the city goes to bi-weekly garbage pickup the limit will still be only three items.

Inaz Boluz said that’s not enough bags for her family of five.

“It's a least two bags per week. It's the minimum for me,” said Boluz.

The idea is to get more people to recycle and throw less in the garbage.

“That shouldn't be a problem for those who are doing their recycling,” said Maria McRae, Ottawa City Councillor. “There’s unlimited amounts of recycling. So you can put out as many blue boxes and as many green bins out as you want.”

Even city workers who pick up the trash say it will be a tough change.

“I think people are still going to put out what they want to put out,” said one worker.

The city said it may look at exceptions for people who are renovating and moving or during certain times of the year like Christmas.
