TORONTO - Ontario's ban on drivers using hand-held devices to talk, email and text is a month old  -- and police say many drivers are complying with the law.

But police also say in this age of multitasking, some people are having a hard time giving up the dangerous habit.

  • Do you put down your cell while driving?

Ottawa police Sgt. Al Ferris says one driver who was behind him going 120 kilometres an hour was speeding up and slowing down and looking in his lap.

The driver was texting on his BlackBerry.

Then there are the two-fisted drivers -- with a cellphone in one hand and a coffee in the other.

Toronto police say drivers are trying to hide their texting in traffic -- and taking their eyes off the road longer than they did before the ban -- creating a dangerous situation.

So far, provincial police have issued more than 1,100 warnings and about two dozen tickets.
