Firefighters were able to rescue a cat from a burning apartment unit near Billings Bridge Shopping Centre late Sunday night.

Flames broke out on the 18th floor at 1365 Bank Street just before 10:30 p.m.  Residents evacuated the building and were kept warm using OC Transpo buses.

Three people were assessed at the scene by paramedics. A 33-year-old man was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.  A 4-year-old girl and 24-year-old woman were also assessed at the scene. They did not need to be transported to hospital.

Fire officials say while the blaze was attacked aggressively and contained to unit 1810 where it broke out, some tenants will not be able to return home due to water damage.

The fire was deemed under control just before midnight.

Damage is estimated to cost $125,000.
