Carleton University has suspended its entire women's soccer team after the school found out about an apparent initiation party over the weekend.

Carleton's director of athletics told CTV Ottawa the university was notified by the school's soccer coach, who found out about the hazing by word of mouth.

Jennifer Brenning said the rookie initiation allegedly involved alcohol abuse and "inappropriate behavour" at a gathering that took place on Sunday.

The team will be suspended for at least two games, which means they will forfeit matches against the University of Toronto and Ryerson University.

Each player must sign a contract with the school at the beginning of the season, agreeing not to participate in any unsporting behaviour, including any kind of initiation that would be considered demeaning, humiliating or disrespectful.

The code of conduct includes the right to penalize any student who passively participated in the hazing, as well as anyone who knew about the initiation but failed to stop it from happening.

The school says the team will remain suspended from play until an investigation into the incident is complete.
