The mother of a Carleton Place woman killed less than 24 hours into her honeymoon in Mexico Wednesday night says her daughter was a "wonderful girl, always smiling and laughing."
Shannon Amy Guy was on a balcony at the Oasis Tulum resort with two other Canadians she and husband Paul had just met when it collapsed.
“Paul’s dad came over to my house to tell me there had been the accident and that Shannon didn't make it,” said Cathy Harker, Shannon’s mother.
“And then he proceeded to tell us about the balcony collapsing and Paul was taking a picture of Shannon and another couple they had met.”
Harker said the part where Paul was standing to take the picture did not collapse.
An employee at the Oasis Tulum resort confirmed one person was killed as a result of an incident on a third floor balcony Wednesday night.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Foreign Affairs said that “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the Canadian who passed away and the 2 other Canadians who were injured.” The statement goes on to say that “Canadian consular officials in Mexico are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to those affected.”
Harker said Paul’s father is travelling to Mexico Friday morning to bring his son back to Canada. Plans are also being made to bring Shannon home too.
Shannon and Paul were married in August 2013. She leaves behind two daughters under the age of four.
