A 62-year-old Carleton Place man is charged with assaulting an OPP officer and resisting arrest during a traffic stop on Dec. 3.

A constable stopped a car westbound on Hwy. 7 at Hwy. 15 in Beckwith Township after reports of a potential impaired driver. The officer saw the driver commit several driving offences, according to police.

The driver would not pull over when prompted. Eventually the police cruiser coaxed the vehicle to the highway shoulder.

The driver immediately exited the car, according to police, and attempted to strike the OPP officer, who prevented the assault. A struggle ensued before other officers arrived and took the man into custody.

The man later failed two breath tests at the Carleton Place OPP detachment, according to police.

Rodger John Spoor was charged with flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault with intent to resist arrest, and impaired driving.

He was held in custody pending a Monday bail hearing in Perth provincial court.
