Autopsy results are expected Wednesday for the mother and baby daughter found dead inside a Carleton Place house over the holiday weekend.
Although the coroner has yet to officially confirm police suspicions of foul play, the town is questioning what, if anything could have prevented the tragedy that is also linked to the Montreal suicide of a 28-year-old man.
Kerry Freda Walters, 25, and her 11-month-old daughter Starla were discovered Sunday at 474 Joseph St., leaving their new neighbours shocked.
Anonymous mourners have left flowers outside the residence, curious to understand what unfolded inside over the weekend.
A car outside still had an Alberta licence plate, evidence of the family's move to Carleton Place last month.
The suicide victim, who lived with Walters and the baby, killed himself by jumping from a window at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel on Sunday.
Ed Sonnenburg, the deputy mayor of Carleton Place, said there is a sense of guilt among residents that the tragedy occurred within their town of 9,800.
"I am sure half the community will be asking themselves where there was something they could have, or should have, been aware of," Sonnenburg told CTV Ottawa.
"We do look after our neighbours if given the chance."
While a cause of death has not been officially confirmed, the mere possibility of domestic violence has been an unpleasant trigger for woman at Lanark County Interval House, a local shelter for abused spouses, said spokeswoman Erin-Lee Todd.
