An Alexandria boy is spending his sixth birthday in hospital after losing his parents in a horrific car crash west of Cornwall two weeks ago.

Bon Howland is talking and doing well after he was critically injured with a brain injury and various broken bones in the head-on collision.

"His recovery is happening so fast. It's just a matter of time now before he will be home!" wrote his sister, Ayesha Howland, in an e-mail to CTV Ottawa.

Bon's parents, Pamela Rathwell, 34, and Rodney Howland, 48, were killed on Aug. 3 when their car crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Bon, who was sitting in the backseat, was rushed to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario where he underwent surgery.

His sister says his recovery has been quick. He woke up for the first time last week, and was transferred out of the hospital's intensive care unit.

"He opened his eyes, looked right at me and said ‘Ayesha?!'

"I replied, ‘Oh my Gosh BON!' I ran over to him, gave him a huge hug and kiss, told him I loved him, and he told me he loved me too!" Howland wrote.

She says her family is looking forward to Bon's full recovery so he can come home to Alexandria where he will live with his sister and her children.
