OTTAWA - Canada's foreign affairs minister calls a massive leak of U.S. government documents "deplorable."

Lawrence Cannon says irresponsible leaks like this one do not serve anybody's national interests and may threaten national security.

The comments came as several news outlets began publishing American diplomatic cables obtained by whistleblower website WikiLeaks.

The documents touch on everything from the release of Guantanamo Bay prisoners to Iran's military capabilities.

Almost 2,000 cables originating from U.S. diplomats in Canada appear to be among the leaked materials.

But those documents are not expected to become public until sometime this week.
