With back-to-school shoppers ready to snap up deals on school supplies, big-box stores are battling for customers by dramatically slashing prices.

Items are selling at radically-low prices, many no more than five or ten cents.

At Walmart, a duotang costs 10 cents, while notebooks are going for 15 cents.

“I’ve been with the company for about 16 years now, and I’ve never seen back-to-school pricing this low before,” said Walmart store manager Bruce Latham.

Latham says those low prices lure customers to the rest of the store for one-stop shopping.

The low prices seem to have started a bit of a price war between Walmart and Staples.

For instance a pack of paper at Walmart costs 17 cents. At Staples, it costs 16 cents.

“We always guarantee the lowest prices…but we also look for value,” said Martin de la Fuente, an assistant store manager at Staples.

Many shoppers are happy to take advantage of the extremely low prices, stocking up on everything from rulers and pencil cases to scissors and glue sticks.

“I have two kids in school, so I’m trying to keep it below $100 for each of them for school supplies,” said shopper Joanne McLennan.

“I do go for quality in some cases,” said another shopper, “but price is definitely important as well.”
