Belleville police used a spike belt to stop a vehicle chase just outside the city Saturday morning.

They said Central Hastings OPP notified them just after midnight Saturday they were trying to stop an erratic driver approaching city limits.

Officers spotted the vehicle and laid down a spike belt as the vehicle came southbound on Sidney Street towards the 401 overpass, then followed it through the Tracey Park Drive area after it drove over the belt.

The car stopped and the driver fled on foot, where he was then caught.

Three police officers suffered minor injuries; one after his vehicle was sideswiped during the chase and two during the foot pursuit.

Police said all three were taken to hospital and released.

Twenty-seven year old Maurice Victor Martin of Bancroft is charged with failure to stop for police, dangerous driving and impaired driving.

He's scheduled to appear in court in Belleville Dec. 19.
