A 24-year-old man has been charged with murder and robbery in the death of an Ottawa woman who was brutally attacked while vacationing in Barbados.

Terry Schwarzfeld died in an Ottawa hospital last week after she was attacked while walking along on isolated stretch of beach on the tropical island in February.

After being treated at a hospital in Barbados, Schwarzfeld was transported to the Civic Campus of the Ottawa hospital where she spent two weeks in a coma.

Police made an arrest in the case earlier this week. Following the arrest, Schwarzfeld's family said they hoped the right person was in custody and that justice will be served.

Schwarzfeld was recently elected as the national president of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, a leading Jewish women's philanthropic organization.
