Autopsies on the two women found lifeless in separate units in the same apartment complex in Gatineau are currently underway in Montreal.

Gatineau police are treating the two deaths as "suspicious."

Police say the first body of a 53-year-old woman was found when they were called to a unit at 267 Rue de Malartic at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The second body of a 64-year-old woman was located when police were called to another unit in the same apartment complex at about 2 p.m. Thursday.

"What we know right now is that there was no trace of violence on the two women and there was no trace of break and entry," said Const. Isabelle Poirier of the Gatineau Police.

Residents of the building have identified the pair as best friends who were inseparable. Both women lived alone.

"It's a little weird, considering they died one day apart and they were good friends too. They were always together," one neighbour told CTV Ottawa.

Officers say they are now interviewing residents to help piece together their case.
