A 28-year-old man is dead after his ATV rear-ended the back of his friend's riding lawnmower in West Carleton. The 26-year-old driver of the lawnmower is charged with drunk driving.

Police say the two friends were riding on an unpaved public road in West Carleton when their vehicles collided at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday.

The ATV driver, who wasn't wearing a helmet, rear-ended the lawnmower, and was thrown from the vehicle, police said. He died in hospital from serious head injuries Monday afternoon. The victim's name is being withheld at the request of his family.

Const. Brian Dodds told CTV Ottawa the pair wasn't racing, but alcohol was involved.

The driver of the lawnmower is now charged with impaired driving. Brian Miller is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 25.
