A deadly fire that killed a three-year-old boy east of Ottawa last week was not criminal in nature, according to an investigation by the Ontario fire marshal's office.

Although investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, which ripped through a home in Fournier, Ont., police said arson has been ruled out as a possibility.

Three-year-old Damien Seguin died of smoke inhalation after he ran back into the burning home on Aug. 27. Police said the family's dog was found lying near the toddler, whose body was discovered in a bedroom on the second floor.

Damien's twin brother Miguel managed to escape the flames, along with their father's girlfriend, Alexandra Goyer, who was babysitting the pair at the time of the incident.

Investigators plan to spend the next few weeks conducting tests to determine the exact cause of the fire.
