A former Ottawa city councillor and mayoral candidate will take over as the new head of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network, an organization that co-ordinates and funds health services across the region.
Alex Munter will begin his new role as CEO of the Champlain LHIN on Jan. 24, taking over from Dr. Robert Cushman.
Munter is currently the head of Ottawa's Youth Services Bureau, which he joined a short time after running for mayor in 2006.
The Champlain LHIN appointed Munter after a rigorous national search. Munter is credited for his leadership in opening a ground-breaking health clinic for young people living on the street, as well as his involvement in many other youth mental health initiatives.
He also has experience heading health and social services committees on city council, as well as working in health planning roles with the former Ottawa-Carleton District Health Council, the Regional Task Force on Health Care and the Ontario Public Health Capacity Review Committee.
The Champlain LHIN has an annual budget of $2.25 billion to fund 211 agencies across the region, including hospitals, long-term care homes and community health centres.
