The City of Ottawa’s planning committee has, in principle, approved a nine-storey condo building in the Little Italy neighbourhood which could pave the way for taller buildings in the area.

The development would be located on Norman Street, just steps from Preston Street.

The owner of Pub Italia said if the plan goes forward, it would be the “end of Little Italy.”

At Ottawa City Hall Tuesday, the committee heard submissions from 19 public delegations.

Many residents said the development would ruin the character and skyline of the neighbourhood, as well as destroy the village feel so many come for.

The proposal goes to council on July 9, 2014.
