More than 500 workers at a paper mill in Gatineau are facing a temporary layoff while the company reduces its inventory.

AbitibiBowater says 530 employees at the mill will be off the job from Jan. 20 to Feb. 24.

The Gatineau mill produces mostly exported newsprint used by newspapers such as the New York Times.

AbitibiBowater is the eighth largest publicly traded pulp and paper manufacturer in the world, with about 18,000 employees and 25 pulp and paper mills around the globe.

The company recently shut down a century-old mill in central Newfoundland, cutting 800 jobs to deal with a slump in North American demand.

A growth in Internet news and advertising has hurt the pulp and paper industry worldwide.
