The Parents of children attending a school-based daycare in Orleans are demanding answers after 5 of the kids disappeared from the playground.

They ended up at a grandmother’s house who drove them back to the daycare

For the kids who are 3, 4 and 5 years old, it was the ultimate adventure.

Run off with your buddies thru the woods.

Now the parents are asking how this could happen.  Julie Proulx left work early today to pick up 3 and a half year old Jaden, not trusting the daycare to look after him anymore.

“This is a parent’s worst nightmare,” says an emotional Proulx, outside the le Coccinelle Daycare attached to Reine-des-Bois school.  “If my husband had got there 5 or 10 minutes earlier, he would have been greeted by someone saying “sorry, we don’t know where your son is or he's not here.”  Are you kidding me? That's unacceptable.”

Jaden was outside yesterday afternoon at the Coccinelle daycare with several children, playing in the yard behind the school, supervised by 3 adults when he  and 4 other kids wandered away, unnoticed by daycare staff.

“J’etais dans le foret avec une personne.”  Jaden says  he went into the forest with someone.

The area around the school is heavily forested with a steep ravine.

The kids ended up at a grandmother's house.  She drove them back to school.

“What shakens me,” says Proulx, “is okay a good Samaritan brought them back to the school but what if it was someone else?”

Coccinelle runs nine private daycares within elementary schools in Orleans in east Ottawa. The director says this is the first time something like this has ever happened.

We are very concerned about the security of children,” says Francine Beaudoin, the Director of Coccinelle, “it's our priority and we're doing everything to make sure it never happens again.”

Beaudoin says they’ve launched an investigation and have also implemented some immediate changes, including ensuring the children are kept close to the school and keeping them within an enclosed playground where that is possible.

Not good enough says the father of a 4 year old who also left the daycare playground.

Gilles Vary says “the people you've left the responsibility of your children, they've lost track.  The horror, the terror, you automatically think of horrible thoughts.”

Julie Proulx says she plans to pick Jaden up every day until she can find another daycare.

“It’s all I can do to protect my son.”
