A multi-million dollar pedestrian bridge project in south Ottawa will be demolished and rebuilt because of poor concrete quality.

A memo to Ottawa city council Friday said the main tower of the bridge being built over the Airport Parkway will be taken down, calling it the best solution.

The bridge's original pricetag was around $5 million, with the city expectating the bridge will still be built inside its budget.

As CTV Ottawa first reported in March, dozens of tests on the bridge near the South Keys shopping centre showed problems with the concrete.

It was originally scheduled to open in October after residents lobbied to make the area safer for pedestrians.

More details will be given to council the week of April 23, including a timeline, after a week of looking at the full report from contractor Louis W. Bray Construction Ltd.
