A 5.9-magnitude earthquake that originated in Virginia was felt along the east coast Tuesday, with people feeling it as far north as Ontario and Quebec.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake occurred at 1:51 p.m., about 64 kilometres northwest of Richmond, Va.

Several people in the Ottawa-area say they felt the earthquake Tuesday afternoon.

Parts of the Pentagon, White House and the Capitol buildings in Washington, D.C. were evacuated. The earthquake was also felt in Rhode Island, New York City and Toronto. No injuries were immediately reported.
