Two young men have been charged after two Ottawa police officers were assaulted in the Byward Market early Friday morning.

Police say around midnight, a 22-year-old man stepped into traffic directly in front of an officer in a marked cruiser near William and York streets.

When the officer asked the man to move off the street, the suspect refused and became aggressive. The suspect then assaulted the officer when the officer tried to arrest him.

Police say the suspect also managed to get hold of the officer’s baton and tried to hit him with it.

Calls for help were made, and when a second officer got the scene, the suspect also assaulted him. Other officers called to the scene were eventually able to apprehend the suspect and take him into custody.

22-year-old Carl Bernade of Ottawa has been charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, disarming a peace officer, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and disobeying a court order.

During the struggle, a group of passersby entered the crime scene after police warned them not to.

As a result, 24-year-old Elvis Musonge was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing police, and uttering threats.
