A 17-year-old girl has died from her injuries after being hit by a pickup truck in Kanata Monday morning.

Ottawa paramedics said a girl was walking on Eagleson Road near Highway 417 when she was hit around 10:25 a.m. Monday.

Police said details on the crash are still vague.

"We know that she was crossing the west side of the street over to the east side of the street," said Insp. Michael Callaghan with the Ottawa Police Service. "It's a tragedy. Honestly, a tragedy."

The busy intersection has an OC Transpo station and Park and Ride, which means transit riders often take risks to catch their bus.

"Some people are in a hurry more than others," said Bashir Elchamaa. "Sometimes the light will be green but we still go because we have to catch the bus, we don't have time to wait."

Some people say rules are broken often by both pedestrians and drivers.

"There's always people running red lights, speeding, jaywalking," said Cody Murray.

Police said they closed Eagleson Road northbound between the 417 and Katimavik Road until around 3:15 p.m. for their investigation, which is ongoing.
