A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition in hospital after he was struck by a vehicle while snowmobiling.

Ottawa Paramedics say the incident happened just before 10 p.m. Saturday on 8th Line road near Glenwood drive just outside of Metcalfe.

Police say a 45-year-old man was driving a vehicle northbound on 8th Line, while the 16-year-old snowmobiler was going southbound on the west shoulder.

The snowmobiler was struck by the vehicle while trying to cross the roadway.

Charges are pending for the driver of the vehicle. Police found him a short time after he fled the scene.

Paramedics were on scene in less than four minutes. They arrived to find the boy semi-conscious after being struck by the vehicle and thrown what they call a “considerable distance.”

The boy was suffering from injuries to his head, torso and legs.

Police are continuing to investigate, and asking any witnesses to contact them.
