16 per cent of all photo radar, red light camera tickets in Ottawa issued on a 1 km stretch of road

One in six photo radar and red light camera tickets in Ottawa were issued along a stretch of King Edward Avenue in 2024. CTV’s Peter Szperling reports.

King Edward Avenue is the hot spot for photo radar and red light camera tickets, with 16 per cent of all camera-related traffic tickets in Ottawa in 2024 issued to drivers on a one-kilometre stretch of the road in Lowertown.

Thousands of motorists use the road every day to travel between Ottawa and Gatineau over the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge.

Statistics show 62,218 of the 391,634 red light and photo radar camera tickets issued on Ottawa roads in the first 11 months of 2024 were issued to drivers using King Edward Avenue, between Besserer Street and Bolton Street.

The photo radar camera on King Edward Avenue, between Bolton Street and St. Patrick Street, was Ottawa’s busiest photo radar camera in the January-November period. A total of 56,126 speeding tickets were issued to drivers through the automated speed enforcement camera program for speeding on King Edward Avenue between February and November 2024.

King Edward Avenue is also home to three of Ottawa’s busiest red light cameras, issuing a total of 6,092 tickets between January and November 2024.

Here is a look at the total number of tickets issued by red light cameras on King Edward Avenue between January and November:

- King Edward Avenue southbound at St. Patrick Street – 2,977

- King Edward Avenue northbound at St. Andrew Street – 1,617 tickets

- King Edward Avenue northbound at Besserer Street – 1,498 tickets

As of the end of 2024, Ottawa had 85 red light cameras and 60 photo radar cameras in operation across the city.

A total of 42,495 tickets were issued in the January-November period through the red light camera ticket program, and 348,634 speeding tickets were issued through the automated speed enforcement camera program.

The fine for being caught running a red light by the red light cameras is $325, which includes a service fee and victim surcharge. The ticket for running the red light is issued to the registered owner of the vehicle. The fine for speeding through the photo radar program is based on the speed of the vehicle.
